Jodhpur Airport's New Terminal, Built for Double the Passengers, Opened This Year

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new terminal building at Jodhpur Airport on 4 July 2026, a greenfield facility built to handle roughly 20 lakh (two million) passengers a year, well above the old terminal's capacity. The roughly ₹480 crore project was commissioned by the Airports Authority of India and designed by the architecture firm STHAPATI, with a brief to reflect Jodhpur's royal Marwar heritage rather than a generic airport template.

What's changed

The new terminal spans around 2,52,000 square feet and is built to Rajputana design cues, fluted domes, multifoil arches, jharokha-style window detailing and sandstone-toned exteriors, with peacock murals and Marwar-inspired artwork inside. For travellers, the practical change is capacity: a terminal built for a fraction of that footfall is now sized for sustained growth in both leisure and business traffic to Rajasthan.

Still a domestic airport, for now

Jodhpur Airport currently operates domestic services only. Officials have described the upgraded terminal as positioning the airport to eventually support international connections as demand grows, though no confirmed international route or timeline has been announced. Travellers connecting onward internationally still need to route through Delhi, Mumbai or another international gateway.

Why it matters for Rajasthan travel

Jodhpur, the Blue City, is one of Rajasthan's most visited destinations alongside Jaipur and Udaipur, and airport capacity has been a recurring bottleneck during peak winter season. A larger terminal should ease congestion for travellers flying in directly rather than arriving overland from Jaipur or Delhi.

Traveller tips

  • The terminal opened 4 July 2026; check with your airline for which terminal building your flight currently uses, as transition periods can affect check-in locations.
  • Jodhpur Airport remains domestic-only; plan connections through a major international hub for onward international travel.
  • Always confirm current flight schedules and any construction-related changes directly with your airline or the Airports Authority of India before travelling.
