7 Things to Do in Chettinad, Tamil Nadu's Mansion Country

Built on fortunes made trading across Burma, Ceylon and Malaya, Chettinad's merchant mansions pair Belgian glass and Burma teak with a spice-heavy cuisine and a 1,600-year-old rock-cut temple, all a few hours from Madurai.

Chettinad is not a single town but a cluster of around 75 villages in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga and Pudukkottai districts, built up from the late 19th century by the Nattukottai Chettiars, a merchant community whose banking and trading networks stretched across Burma, Ceylon, Malaya and beyond. The fortunes they brought home paid for hundreds of mansions combining Tamil courtyard architecture with imported Italian marble, Belgian mirrors and Burma teak, most now standing empty or partly occupied in villages that see a fraction of Rajasthan's mansion-circuit crowds. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.

1. Kanadukathan's Chettiar mansions

The best-preserved cluster of Chettinad mansions sits in and around Kanadukathan village, where grand courtyard houses built by 19th and early 20th-century merchant families show off hand-carved teak pillars, Belgian mirror inlays and the region's distinctive handmade floor tiles, several open to visitors for a fee.

2. Athangudi tile workshops

Athangudi village makes the handmade cement floor tiles seen throughout Chettinad's mansions, produced by a hand-pressing process that dates to the years after the 1929 Depression. Several workshops let visitors watch tiles being made and buy directly from the makers.

3. Pillaiyarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar Temple

An ancient rock-cut cave temple dedicated to Ganesha, carved into a rock face and dated to around the 5th century, making it one of the oldest surviving rock-cut shrines in the region, predating Chettinad's merchant wealth by well over a thousand years.

4. Karaikudi's antique and architectural salvage markets

Chettinad's main town, Karaikudi, has a long-running trade in salvaged mansion fittings, from carved pillars to old brass and woodwork, as families sell off pieces from houses too costly to maintain; several shops around the town centre specialise in this trade.

5. A Chettinad cuisine trail

Chettinad cooking is one of India's most distinctively spiced regional cuisines, built around freshly ground pepper, star anise, stone flower and other spices sourced from the community's old Ceylon and Malabar trade routes; Karaikudi's small eateries are a more authentic starting point than the cuisine's often-diluted export versions elsewhere in India.

6. Kundrakudi Murugan Temple

Set on a small hillock outside Karaikudi, this hilltop temple dedicated to Murugan offers a wider view over the flat Chettinad landscape and is a popular local pilgrimage stop, especially during Tamil festival months.

7. A heritage-mansion homestay

A number of Chettinad's grandest houses have been converted into heritage homestays and small hotels, letting visitors sleep inside the courtyard architecture rather than viewing it from outside, often with home-style Chettinad meals included.

Traveller tips

  • Madurai Airport, around two hours by road, is the nearest major air link; Karaikudi also has a railway station on the Madurai–Chennai line.
  • October to March is the most comfortable window; Chettinad's flat, sparsely shaded terrain gets very hot from April to June.
  • Many mansions are privately owned and only partly open to visitors; a local guide or homestay host can help arrange entry to houses not on the standard circuit.
  • Chettinad cuisine runs genuinely spicy; those sensitive to heat should ask for milder preparations when ordering.
